I'm finally getting around to redesigning my own website. The new home page has the new design on it. It may take me a couple of days to get everything updated with the new style. :)

I've been extremely busy with freelance web programming lately...not that you'd know from looking at my own farm site that I'm any kind of professional, LOL!

I've also been recording webcasts from major horse shows. I recorded the American Paint Horse Associations World Championship Show and the American Quarter Horse Youth Association World Show and the Reichert Celebration and have begun recording the NSBA Championship Show.

As I have time, I process the recordings and upload the files to either Youtube or Google Video, so other folks can veiw them also. I like to record the webcasts so that I can watch the shows at my convenience.

After uploading the files, I display them with ASP pages that read RSS/XML dynamically. Check 'em out:

You can view my Youtube Channel at http://youtube.com/viewhorses, where I have a director's account.

I've joined the Flint Hills Horse Park committee. The Horse Park will be the horse show and events facility partnered with the KSU Equicenter. Very visionary, very exciting and something that will be a tremendous enhancement to our community and region. I sometimes say that it will be the 'Spruce Meadows of the plains.' ;)

I went to a couple of horse shows in May and showed Danni in Western Pleasure. She won 3 first places. There is always room for improvement, but I felt very pleased with how deep-hocked and cadenced her lope was. Weather, fuel costs, and other issues have kept me from attending other shows, but I do hope to get back to showing soon.

The mares are done foaling for this year. I raised only two babies of my own this spring, a colt by War Leo Zippo X Docs Lady Of Faith, an elderly daughter of Docs Prescription, and a filly by Zee Si Si Topz X Te Aura Seeker. Dia's TB mare foaled a bay colt by PS Sign The Card and Mike's Paint mare foaled a filly by Silent Style.

At Powder River Ranch in northwestern Iowa, a mare that I used to own, Shorty Seeker, recently foaled a colt by Danni's sire, Hot Line To Zippo. I plan to purchase him because I wasn't fortunate enough to get a foal from Shorty myself.

After having them here for months and wondering what the heck was wrong with people, for not snapping up these very nice mares, Angel and Curly have been sold. It is "feast or famine." After all this time, now within the past two weeks, could have sold several of the same. Sigh...

Results of having had real winter weather for a change -- did lots of ebay shopping. Bought show clothes. Discovered that daughter looks MUCH better in said show clothes than I do. Sent show clothes home with daughter.

Added an elderly daughter of Zippo Pine Bar to the herd. She's Zippo Beauty, Quarter Horse dam of APHA Champion/World Champion Sire 'Zippen Robin.'  She's in great shape, but getting a baby from one that old is a risk. Worth a try, I figure. You'd think by now I would know better. However, I have a daughter of Docs Prescription that is 26 years old and due to foal this year, with God's blessing.

I got my copy of Ernie Rodina's "Better Horses Network" newspaper today. I have an ad in it and am pleased with how it looks in print. I designed it myself; got to get some good out of the ol' art degree somehow! This newspaper is an excellent source of information for area horse people. For details, see the Better Horses Network website.

I am pleased to report that my daughter, Georgia Schafer, will be coming to help me train horses also, on a part-time basis. She is in the Kansas National Guard and is also a college student. She lives with her husband, Kevin, in Winchester.

Although only 22, Georgia has already earned herself quite a nice horse trainer resume. From a very young age, she has helped me train horses (dogs too) and has started and trained several horses herself. For a few years, she attended shows with our friend Dia Weisenberger-Fowles. She took hunt seat lessons from Ann White and learned how to ride jumpers. She participated in 4-H and won several grand championships. She earned some year-end high point awards in the local saddle club.

She was one of a few young people who was selected to attend the AQHA MBNA Horse Racing Experience. Each kid was assigned to a racing trainer and got to participate in the process of preparing a horse for the MBNA Racing Challenge.

She lived for a few months with one of our friends in Colorado, working as a stablehand. Later, she lived with Jeanne and Pete Dial in Oklahoma for a few months, working with Jeanne and learning more about horse training.

Georgia learned how to trim and shoe horses at the highly-regarded Heartland Horse Shoeing School in Lamar, Missouri. She had a farrier business for a year until she started having some problems with work-related arthritis. Then she got a job at the Orscheln farm supply store, met Kevin, and moved to Leavenworth.

In Leavenworth, Georgia went to work for reining trainer Mark Gratny. Mark is one of the most liked and respected people in the horse business and she stayed on there for two years, until she decided to join the National Guard.

Her military training occupied her for about a year, and she is back in Kansas now. Like the rest of us, she is eager for spring to get here so we can have more time outdoors with the horses! Georgia is also a talented artist and she taught me much of what I know about how to do computer graphics.

We have a new assistant trainer, Kyle Sadewhite. Kyle is 19 years old and is from Overland Park, Kansas. From when he was a child, Kyle and his sister got experience in 4-H, showing "everything from chickens to sheep to horses."

Kyle credits his father for everything he knows about horses and says he still finds his dad to be a very useful resource for information and advice about them.

A K-State major in Animal Science and Industry, Kyle plans to attend Colorado State University after this
semester to study Equine Science and hopes one day to have a profession in Equine Reproduction. He is also a mechanic in the United States Army Reserves.

This has been a very enjoyable year for us. We've made many new friends and my training business has grown. We are also continuing with facility improvements, bit by bit.

Through 2006, I hosted several open horse shows, with the help of many friends and volunteers. We haven't decided yet whether to do it again in 2007 or take a break. If we do have more shows, the details will be posted at www.walktrotlope.com .

I am riding several horses for clients and also several of my own. We have some very nice horses for sale. By spring, I'll have several 2 year olds broke to ride and ready for sale as well as a few finished show horses.

HORSE TRAINING - COACHING - HORSEBACK RIDING LESSONS
Youth, beginners, novices welcome. I have suitable lesson horses for students. If you want to ride for recreation, or if you would like to improve your riding for show competition, I would be happy to work with you. Lessons are $35 per hour. Horse training is $350 per month for geldings and mares and $450 monthly for stallions.

As a horse trainer, I take it slow and easy with a horse, breaking lessons down into simple steps that are easy for them to understand, and then I build on their successes. I do not attempt to force a horse to do anything. Instead, I finesse them into performing the desired behavior with patience, kindness, and affection. The result is happy horses who enjoy their work.

QHappy! "Quarter Horse Activities Program"
I've started a new program to record Quarter Horses' wins at open shows and to award recognition for their wins there. Check it out at www.QHappy.org or www.QHAP.org.
